If you want the best compact everyday carry bag you can find, you want the Maxpedition Fatboy Versipack. It’s the one I’ve used for over a year now. It holds a medium frame semi-auto (such as the Glock 23 or Sig P229) in the nifty, quick CCW compartment. The Velcro holster is available separately. In the main compartment and additional pockets you can store extra magazines, your wallet, phone, flashlight, pens, notepads, pocket knife, snack… and I’m just getting started.
Design, materials, and build quality are exceptional, as you’d expect from Maxpedition. They use 1050 Denier nylon fabric, top quality zippers, and excellent stitching. The main compartment features 156 cu. in. of space, and there are several additional pockets and sleaves. There’s a clip and MOLLE compatible webbing.
I carry mine cross-shoulder — slung over my head and onto the left shoulder, but resting on my right side. It’s very comfortable and easy to swing behind me so both hands are free. A quick-release clip makes it no problem to take it off if I’m wearing a bulky coat, for instance. There’s a little pocket cleverly located on the strap for holding a clamshell cellphone and a couple of pens.
Available accessories include the previously mentioned CCW holster, a dual mag pouch, and Grimloc carabiners. These are not your run-of-the-mill carabiners. They are specially designed to break open at 80 lbs. so you can’t get hung by any items you might attach to your pack. Also, they have a MOLLE webbing catch slot for firm attachment to the webbing. I have a set of four myself, and this is one of the best accessories you can buy for any MOLLE compatible gear, including anything from Maxpedition.
The Fatboy also comes in a left-side carry model called the Fatboy S-Type.
